  1. Do Your Own Interviewing.

    I have seen this mistake repeated over and over again – leaving the hiring to the people in HR. Unless your Human Resources department carries a lead role in your business process — and sadly very few carry that privilege —  all they will be able to do is look for the tactical qualifications you have outlined for your vacant position. You are the one who knows the soft skills and personal qualities to look for, which is the key to what makes someone a good fit with your team.  By doing your own interviewing, although time consuming, will ensure you connect with the right talent, faster and more productively.

  1. Never Compromise

    I spent most of my early headhunting years in high technology, where it’s always been extremely difficult to hire right. Salaries go through the roof fueled by companies competing to hit the market faster with cheaper mouse traps. Short term goals make it easy to overlook the qualities that are essential for long term right fit.

  1. Slow Down.

    Nothing kills a company faster than growing too fast. Growth is fun and exciting and creates new opportunities and faster promotions for employees. As Callis founder, Dean Parker, states in recent Forbes article, it’s about balancing the use of capital with hiring the right talent at the right time. Growing at a rate faster than your ability to great talent and reinforce culture will backfire, every time.

  2. ABR – Always Be Recruiting. 

Don’t wait until you have to hire before you start looking. To succeed in business, hiring must be at the top of your priority list. Great leaders hire great people and consistently succeed in businesses because they know the importance of always keeping an eye out for, and grabbing onto, exceptional talent. Hiring people who fit all of your hiring should never be something you compromise on.
